Lt Gen Abhay Krishna, GOC-in-C Eastern Command, awarded, gallantry and meritorious service medals to Army personnel at an impressive and solemn Investiture ceremony conducted in Albert Ekka Auditorium in Fort William Kolkata today.
Five Yudh Seva Medals and 32 Sena Medals (Gallantry) were awarded. Out of these, three jawans made the supreme sacrifice during operations and were given the award posthumously. The prestigious Sena Medal (Gallantry) Awards awarded to Nk Chitra Saikia of 21 Rastriya Rifles, Rifleman Paokholet Bailte of 24 Assam Rifles and Naib Subedar Suraj Tamang of 44 Assam Rifles were received by their wives. The Tradition of putting one’s life in danger for the sake of the Nation continues to remain strong in the Indian Army.
Amongst today’s gallantry award winners too this tradition has been conspicuous and prominent amongst them stands the act of Naib Subedar Suraj Tamang 44 Assam Rifles. He while leading his team on an area domination patrol in Ukhrul District of Manipur, displayed exceptional bravery and presence of mind and save the lives of troops under his command but while doing so made the supreme sacrifice and attained martyrdom in the highest traditions of Indian Army and our Nation. His Award of Sena Medal (Gallantry) was received by his wife Shrimati Sanjila Tamang.
On the occasion nine Sena Medals (Distinguished) & 16 Vishisht Seva Medals were also awarded distinguished service. Out of the 32 gallantry awards given today 22 were awarded to JCOs and other ranks. Assam Rifles were awarded 11 gallantry awards indicating their invaluable contribution to internal security in the North East.
The Eastern Army Commander, Lt Gen Abhay Krishna, later interacted informally with the award winners and their families and acknowledged their invaluable contribution towards maintaining the highest standards of professionalism as exemplified by the Indian Army.
