Former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar Leaves For Heavenly Abode

Former Defence Minister and 4 time Chief Minister of Goa, Manohar Parrikar dies of prolonged illness. Hearing the demise of Parrikar, Nation slipped in deep grief. President of India in his condolense message said, “Extremely sorry to hear of the passing of Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa, after an illness borne with fortitude and dignity. An epitome of integrity and dedication in public life, his service to the people of Goa and of India will not be forgotten”.

India witnessed a shift in India’s Defence policy from being defensive to offensive- defence during his tenure as defence minister in the form of surgical strikes in PoK and in North East. Rafale deal to procure 36 Rafale fighter jets from France was signed by him. The long pending demand of ex-servicement for One Rank One Pension (OROP) was met when he was the defence minister. Parrikar is instrumental in formulating new Defence Procurement Policy focussing on PM Modi’s Make In India initiative. He on more than one occassion talked about getting rid of middleman in defence deal. He was not completely in agreement of blacklisting companies as he believed that blacklisting would harm country’s security. He was instrumental in bringing strategic partnership model in DPP. Parrikar’s dealing as defence minister strived for transparency and accountability in the system. Parrikar was a great patriot. He often said that he misses fish curry of Goa and had great attachment with the people of Goa. Many in India would often termed him as “PM material” owing to his vision and dedication.

Current Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tweeted: “Shri Manohar Parrikar is no more. A sincere, honest & sensitive political activist. Was simple and down to earth, I learnt a lot from Shri.Parrikar. As Raksha Mantri his contribution to making the armed forces a modernised, lean & mean fighting machine will remain unparalleled”.

Parrikar is epitome of human spirit, symbol of simplicity and worked for people of Goa till his last breath. Television in India soon after his death played a few days old video clip of him asking his followers, “How is the josh”. He talked about transfering his josh to the supporters in Goa.

Parrikar went to US for his treatment and later got admitted in New Delhi’s AIIMs. People hailed and admired him when he presented Goa’s budget with tube attached to his nose. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled his death and posted his picture with Parrikar on his twitter handle.

“Shri Manohar Parrikar was an unparalleled leader. A true patriot and exceptional administrator, he was admired by all. His impeccable service to the nation will be remembered by generations. Deeply saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti”.

“Shri Manohar Parrikar was the builder of modern Goa. Thanks to his affable personality and accessible nature, he remained the preferred leader of the state for years. His pro-people policies ensured Goa scales remarkable heights of progress”.

“India will be eternally grateful to Shri Manohar Parrikar for his tenure as our Defence Minister. When he was RM, India witnessed a series of decisions that enhanced India’s security capacities, boosted indigenous defence production and bettered the lives of ex-servicemen”.

Leaders across party lines paid their tribute to late Manohar Parrikar and termed his demise as great loss to the country.

Parrikar’s wife died of cancer in 2001 and he raised his two sons Utpal and Abhijat. One of his son runs an industrial unit and he would boast of his self made son’s feat as he himself was an IIT Mumbai graduate. Parrikar suffered from Pancratic cancer. Born on 13 December 1955 in Goa’s Mapusa.

Parrikar served as Defence Minister from 09th November 2014 to 13 March 2017. Congress President Rahul Gandhi also condoled his death. In a message on twitter, Rahul Gandhi said, “I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Goa CM, Shri Manohar Parrikar Ji, who bravely battled a debilitating illness for over a year. Respected and admired across party lines, he was one of Goa’s favourite sons. My condolences to his family in this time of grief.

9:30 AM to 10:30 AM: Shri. Manohar Parrikar’s mortal remains to be kept at the BJP head office, Panjim.

10:30 AM: Shri. Manohar Parrikar’s mortal remains to be taken to Kala Academy, Panjim.

11:00 AM to 04:00 PM: Public to pay their final respects to Shri. Manohar Parrikar.

04:00 PM: Funeral procession of Shri. Manohar Parrikar to Miramar

04:30 PM: Vidhi at Miramar, Panaji.

05:00 PM: Antim Kriya of Shri. Manohar Parrikar.

National Defence deeply mourns the sad demise of Mr Manohar Parrikar and express heartfelt condolences to the family members. May God give them strength to bear with the loss. May his soul rest in peace.
