In a historic move, Modi Government today approved the creation of the post of Chief of Defence Staff in the rank of four star General. The Government is soon likely to announce the name of first CDS. According to sources, General Bipin Rawat’s name is on top of Modi Government’s list. In any case, it is a great political decision pending for almost a decade.
The CDS will head the department of military affairs; but will not exercise any military command, including over the three Service Chiefs, so as to be able to provide impartial advice to the political leadership. The three Chiefs will continue to advise RM on matters exclusively concerning their respective Services. Chief of Defence Staff in the rank of a four star General will draw salary and perquisites equivalent to a Service Chief.
The Department of Military Affairs headed by CDS will be created within the Ministry of Defence and function as its Secretary. By creating the post of CDS, Prime Minister Narendra Modi kept his promise made on 15th August this year. In his address to the nation, PM said “after formation of this post (CDS), all the three forces will get effective leadership at the top level.” Watch full story at: https://youtu.be/9Ox1f429Pc0
