Indian Army And Jamia Millia Islamia University Sign MoU For Academic Collaboration

National Defence Bureau,
New Delhi, 28 September 2017
Indian Army and Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMIU), New Delhi recorded their mutual intent for academic collaboration, technical advancement and progression of Army Personnel, in a MoU signed today between Lt. Gen. Ashwani Kumar, Adjutant General, IHQ of MoD (Army) &  Prof Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMIU).

The University agreed to recognise the in-service courses run by the Army. This would facilitate admission of defence personnel in second or third year Graduation/ Post Graduation/ Doctorate programme through the medium of distance learning. This would enable the soldiers to enhance their academic qualification for a better future.

Jawans who leave the service early in their life generally find it difficult to move forward in their career because of lack of degree or diploma. But with new collaboration, soldiers can avail diploma and degree while being in service. Indian Army follows the suit after Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, which already have an MoU with JMIU.

“Indian Army has some avenues to enhance their (soldiers’) educational qualification but that has been on a case to case basis. There will be minimum score laid down on which they can earn a diploma or degree. If they are short of academic qualification, they can acquire through the university”, said Lt Gen Ashwani Kumar, Adjutant General of Indian Army. (Watch the details provided by Lt Gen Ashwani Kumar on the MoU)

“JMI University has choice based credit system so we have done the same arrangement with the Navy and Air Force where the training which has been given to these personnel, we will evaluate them and credit them and then for minimum required credit we will be providing teaching and study material, once they attain a minimum number of credit, so they will attain a diploma or degree”, explains Prof Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia University. Speaking on the occasion, Lt Gen Ashwani Kumar also recalled the contribution of JMIU towards nation building, respecting the cultural and religious diversity and emphasising the inclusive spirit of our Nation.
