American company Sig Sauer to supply 72,400 Assault Rifles to Indian armed forces. A contract for procurement of 72,400 Assault Rifle through FTP from M/s Sig Sauer, USA has been signed on 12th Februry 2019.
The Indian Armed Forces are presently equipped with 5.56x45mm INSAS Rifle. There is an urgent requirement of replacing the In-service 5.56×45 mm INSAS Rifle with a 7.62x51mm Assault Rifle which is compact, robust, modern in technology and simple to maintain in field conditions.
AoN was accorded by the DAC on 16 Jan 2018 and the case was categorized as BUY (Global) under FTP for procurement of quantity 72,400 Assault Rifle [Indian Army (IA) – qty 66,400, Indian Navy (IN) – qty 2,000 and Indian Air Force (IAF) – qty 4,000] along with accessories under FTP.
The entire qty 72,400 would be delivered within 12 months of date of signing of the contract.
