A seriously injured Sri Lankan fisherman from fishing vessel (FV) Geeth Baba was evacuated and brought to Kochi AM 03 Mar 18 for hospitalization by Indian Coast Guard. The fishing boat was operating around 340 nautical miles (NM) west of Kochi coast. The patient had sustained serious head injury from the pick-up hook while fishing 98 NM off Cheniyakara Island causing infected laceration in posterior head which was about 08 cm long and 1.5 cm deep.
Coast Guard Regional Headquarter (West) was intimated regarding the incident on 01 Mar 18 at about 12:30 pm.
Accordingly, the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Samar, which was operating off Minicoy then, was immediately directed for rendering assistance to the boat. ICGS Samar proceeded with maximum speed from Minicoy to evacuate the patient from the fishing boat. The ship’s “Boarding team” along with medical officer boarded Geeth Baba at about 09:30 PM and the seriously injured fisherman, Malwatta Pathirannehalage Sunil Shantha (Age 47 yrs) was shifted on board ship. Ship’s medical team provided the first aid including scalp suturing under local anaesthesia thereby stabilizing the patient’s condition.
FV Geeth Baba continued it’s voyage to Sri Lanka with balance crew. FV Geeth Baba had departed Sri-Lanka on 14 Feb with 05 Crew for fishing.The Quick and prompt action by the Coast Guard has thus resulted in saving the precious life of the Sri Lankan fisherman.
