United Nations Security Council (UNSC) declared Maulana Masood Azhar as global terrorist. China, who has earlier vetoed the move many times by putting technical hold in 1267 sanctions committee has now removed his objection. This has facilitated the ban on Masood Azhar. China’s foreign ministry yesterday hinted change in China’s position.
The ban will force Pakistan to freeze accounts and assets of Maulana Masood and his proscribed Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). With travel ban on Masood, Pakistan has to arrest him. India’s victory in UN is likely to help Modi in election. It is a diplomatic victory but Masood Azhar and terror organisation will continue to remain a challenge to Indian Security Forces as in all likelihood Masood will morph in other form. However, travel ban will affect him directly in any case ban will stop his international movement.
Shift in China’s position on Masood indicates bonhomie between the leaders of two asian giants. India’s ambassador at UN Syed Akbaruddin thanked all nations for supporting India’s efforts to declare Masood Azhar a global terrorist.
Big,small, all join together.
Masood Azhar designated as a terrorist in @UN Sanctions list
Grateful to all for their support. 🙏🏽#Zerotolerance4Terrorism

Maulana Masood Azhar’s mouthpiece website alqalam and his media network should now be put down or removed permanently. The website, however, is still functioning and Azhar has broadcasted his latest audio on alqalam. Masood Azhar in his audio criticized Sri Lanka Government and justified the attack in Sri Lanka. The rustle in the audio suggest as if he is near a heavy traffic area or recording at a place which is near road.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a late evening rally in Jaipur termed the designation of Masood Azhar as global terrorist, a victory of 135 crore Indians.
MEA Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar in repsonse to media queries on the ban said, “The 1267 Sanctions Committee’s decision to designate the leader of Jaish-e-Mohammad, Masood Azhar, as a UN proscribed terrorist is a step in the right direction to demonstrate the international community’s resolve to fight against terrorism and its enablers”.
“We welcome the decision. This is in accordance with India’s position and in line with the information that India has shared with the members of the Sanctions Committee regarding terrorist activities of Masood Azhar and the Jaish-e-Mohammad. India will continue with its efforts through international forums to ensure that terrorist organizations and their leaders who cause harm to our citizens are brought to justice”, he added.
Masood Azhar has been responsible for many terror attacks in India including J&K Assembly attack, Parliament attack, Pathankot Air Base attack, Uri attack, and latest Pulwama attack on CRPF convoy besides the infamous IC-814 Hijack. It will be a long way to go as Pakistan never accepted Indian dossiers on Masood Azhar’s crime and his terror network. Pulwama attack forced Indian Government to sanction aerial strikes on Balakot terror Camp in Pakistan. If the ban is really imposed in letter and spirit by Pakistan then half of Kashmir problem today is alsmost solved.
China’s foreign ministry spokesperson also responded on media query. Geng Shuang said, “The 1267 Committee of the UN Security Council has detailed criteria for the listing procedures. China always believes that the relevant work should be carried out in an objective, unbiased and professional manner and based on solid evidence and consensus among all parties”.
“On this listing issue, China has been communicating with relevant parties in a constructive and responsible fashion. Recently, relevant countries revised and re-submitted the materials for the listing proposal to the 1267 Committee. After careful study of the revised materials and taking into consideration the opinions of relevant parties concerned, China does not have objection to the listing proposal”.
“The proper settlement of the above-mentioned issue again shows that in international counter-terrorism cooperation, we have to uphold the rules and procedures of relevant UN body, follow the principle of mutual respect, resolve differences and build consensus through dialogue, and prevent politicizing technical issues”.
“I would like to stress that Pakistan has made enormous contributions to fighting terrorism, which deserves the full recognition of the international community. China will continue to firmly support Pakistan’s efforts to combat terrorist and extremist forces”.
