Fire Accident At DRDO’s HEMRL Laboratory In Pune, One dies

One person died in a fire accident today afternoon at High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) of DRDO. According to sources, the fire broke out in building number 16 at about 1500 hrs. Another injured is rushed to the hospital. The cause of fire is being investigated by Hinjewadi police station. 

The deceased, Sonawane, belonged to a private company operating under GOCO model (Government Owned, Company Operated). The company Shree Gajanan Facilities Private Limited is registered at Boisar, Thane. The company has two directors Anjali Dayanand Mane and Dayanand Anant Mane. National Defence, however, could not reach out to the company for specific details about accident. DRDO officials did not confirm the incident at HEMRL.

History of Accidents AT HEMRL

  • Six people, including two scientists, died on 25th April 2002 in a fire at India’s missile experimentation facility. The fire broke out in the solid rocket propellant section of the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL).
  • A blast blew the roof of the HEMRL building on 30 September 2009.
  • Three contractual workers have received severe burn injuries in an explosion which led to a fire in the Igniter Complex of the HEMRL on 22 December 2015.
