NEW DELHI: Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday alleged that then-defence minister Manohar Parrikar was “buying fish” when Prime Minister Narendra Modi “changed” the Rafale deal, reported news agency ANI.
“Defence minister Goa mein tha, machhi ki dukan mein machhi khareed raha tha… usko pata bhi nahi tha ke Modi ji ne Rafale ka contract badal dia (The defence minister was in Goa, in a fish shop buying fish… he didn’t even know PM Modi changed the Rafale deal),” ANI quoted Gandhi as saying in Karnataka’s Saundatti.
Earlier this month, Gandhi had alleged a “scam” in the purchase of the aircraft, after the ruling dispensation refused to disclose details of the deal.
“The Defence Minister says that we will not reveal the amount paid for buying Rafael aircraft. What does this mean? This only means there is a scam. Modi ji personally went to Paris, he changed the deal. The whole country knows it,” he had said.
His party had accused the Centre of purchasing the fighters at an inflated price, resulting in a huge loss to the exchequer, and had also alleged wrong-doing.
The government, however, has maintained that it has managed to secure a “better deal” in terms of price, capability, equipment, delivery and maintenance than the one “notionally negotiated” by the previous UPA regime. Read full article. Click here!
