Cariappa became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, taking over from the last British Commander, General Sir Francis Robert Roy Bucher, marking India’s full control over its armed forces. The Indian Army, as the modern unified force, was established on 1st April 1895, by the British, merging the three Presidency armies (Bengal, Bombay, and Madras) into one.
