A soldier-scholar in the truest sense, Lt Gen Subramani’s journey began at the NDA and IMA, leading to his commissioning into the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985. But his expertise extends far beyond the parade ground. An alumnus of the Joint Services Command Staff College in the UK and the National Defence College in New Delhi, he holds a Master’s from King’s College London and an M.Phil in Defence Studies.
Even as he ascends to the military’s highest office, his commitment to learning continues—he is currently pursuing his PhD, balancing the rigors of leadership with academic excellence. With a career spanning over 40 years, the General Officer has mastered the diverse challenges of India’s geography. From leading the 16 Garhwal Rifles in counter-insurgency operations in Assam to commanding the 17 Mountain Division in the Central Sector, his operational experience is vast.
Crucially, he commanded the 2 Corps—the premier strike corps of the Indian Army on the Western Front—and served as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff. Having served as a Defence Attaché in Kazakhstan and the Military Adviser to the National Security Council, he possesses a deep, nuanced understanding of the operational dynamics on both the Western and Northern borders. His bravery and service have been recognized with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, among many others.
As India moves toward globalisation and modernized joint warfare, Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani’s blend of field experience and strategic intellect makes him the ideal choice to lead the Armed Forces. A leader, a strategist, and a lifelong student of war—India’s new CDS stands ready to safeguard the nation’s future.
