A massive gathering of military might has just kicked off in Northeast India! Today, Multilateral Military Exercise PRAGATI 2026 officially commenced at the Umroi Military Station in Meghalaya. The powerhouse lineup includes Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.
But what does PRAGATI actually stand for? It means the Partnership of Regional Armies for Growth and Transformation in the Indian Ocean Region. Built on the spirit of equality, friendship, and mutual respect, this fortnight-long exercise is all about building rock-solid military ties.

During the grand opening ceremony, Major General Sunil Sheoran, Additional Director General of Infantry, welcomed the contingents and stressed the importance of tackling modern security challenges together.
Over the next two weeks, these armies will focus on four major goals: seamless coordination in joint operations, sharing best combat practices, strengthening defense camaraderie, and building a common framework for intelligence sharing in multinational environments.
The core focus of PRAGATI 2026 is Counter-terrorism operations in challenging semi-mountainous and jungle terrain.
We’re talking intensive joint planning exercises, live tactical drills, and coordinated field maneuvers designed to push the adaptability, endurance, and tactical precision of these troops to the absolute limit.
But that’s not all. India is also using this platform to showcase its booming defense self-reliance. Under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, top Indian tech and defense companies are exhibiting indigenous innovations and state-of-the-art equipment to global partners. Exercise PRAGATI 2026 is set to pave the way for a safer, more collaborative Indian Ocean Region.
