He said that U.S. President Donald Trump has made both the United States’ and his personal commitment to NATO clear. “The transatlantic partnership remains the bedrock of our alliance”. Mark Rutte was addressing a press conference on 06 March alongside Polish president Andrzej Duda.

Polish President Duda has called on all NATO countries to increase their defense spending to at least 3% of GDP immediately. He has submitted a written request to the Secretary General, asking for this issue to be discussed at the upcoming summit in The Hague. He has proposed that a decision be made to allocate at least 3% of the GDP of NATO member states towards defense.

“The situation is such that we cannot wait until 2030,” Duda stated during the news conference, emphasizing the urgency of his proposal. The request made by the Polish President is a significant deviation from the current standard of 2% GDP contribution towards defense by NATO countries.
